Frequently asked questions.
How long does this class run?
This class runs all year round. There are many learning experiences that come from each season, and each season challenges students and develops their self confidence in the outdoors!
Can my student bring a phone?
We ask that students do not bring electronic devices to class as they can be distracting and take away from a nature based experience. If a child needs to bring an electronic device with to class for specific reasons, we ask that you discuss with the instructor first.
My child doesn’t like the outdoors. Would they like this class?
Many students who do not come in with a connection with the outdoors often have very transformative and life changing experiences when put in an outdoor classroom. There is no guarantee that sending your child to forest school will make them like the outdoors, however there is a good chance the student will develop a relationship with nature and possibly grow to love the outdoors.
I’m worried about the safety of my child. What policies do you have to make sure my child does not get hurt?
As a forest school, we encourage challenging a child’s skills. This often comes with a chance of injury as they are testing their physical boundaries. Additionally, we are in the outdoors and things like scraps and bruises are common. With that said, each class period we discuss safety as a group and ensure students know what boundaries they are not allowed to push. There are always two adults keeping an eye on students to make sure everyone is accounted for and within reason of their skills. Additionally, each staff member has a binder of a student’s medical information incase of a medical emergency. Lastly, each staff member is trained in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. We try to mitigate injury as much as possible, but also understand that the setting we are in provides more hazards than a typical classroom.
What do you do in bad weather?
If we are aware of a possible thunderstorm, tornado, blizzard, hail storm or other extreme weather conditions, class will be canceled and all participants will be notified. For weather such as snow or rain, we encourage students to still attend class! Rain and snow provide a new set of learning possibilities that often lead to the most fun!
